A Case Study on the Successful Application of Retrofitting Tripping Automation on Deep Water Rigs

In the presented approach to deploying tripping automation, a team consisting of operator, drilling contractor, and drilling equipment OEM collaborated to successfully deploy and improve the well construction process. The tripping process was upgraded with new software and through extensive training, offshore support, and continuous improvement, the rig was able to operate in a more automated mode as well as enhancing the safety by improving tripping hierarchy of control. KPIs were established and measured to visualize and improve performance output over 1.6M ft of automated tripping. The study shows how rapid the crews adopted and learned the new automation functionality.

Preliminary results from the upgrade show that the tripping process for both rigs are more consistent when using the most autonomous mode of the new tripping automation software. The results showed the more you decouple humans from repetitive tasks, the better and safer the process performs
